This group is made up of selected students in grade 7 who need to develop skills that will make them more successful at understanding, managing, developing and handing in class assignments.
The class will cover a variety of areas as listed above but for the purposes of my "Journal for Learning", I will be taking a closer look at students listening skills.
In our lead up lessons, I presented information on learning styles and the types of (or purposes for) listening. From Saskatchewan Education I want students to ask themselves why they are listening.
* Are you listening to receive information?
* Are you listening to follow instructions?
* Are you listening to evaluate information?
* Are you listening for pleasure?
* Are you listening to empathize?
The lesson was a DUD! Boring with a capital B. This is where I decided that our focus on Oral Language development would help me do the work to engage the class and help them to make their own goals around developing their listening skills.
I will begin at the next class with a self evaluation which will combine a review of the material presented at the BORING lesson with some honest self reflection and goal setting for the students.
Lets see where this leads me.
